DISCOVER FANO
Where ancient Rome meets the sea.
Fano’s history stretches back more than two thousand years. Ancient Fanum Fortunae retains Roman landmarks, beginning with the Arch of Augustus, a symbol of the city.
Vitruvius is a central part of the story. In January 2026, Italy’s Ministry of Culture announced the identification of the basilica described in De architectura, uncovered in Piazza Andrea Costa. The discovery opens new perspectives on Fano’s past.
The story continues through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, historic churches, palaces and maritime traditions. Carnival, brodetto fish stew and moretta add further voices to a city that continues to reveal itself.
